Learner drivers will be allowed on motorways from 2018

Learner drivers will be allowed to take motorway driving lessons with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls from 2018.

Any motorways lessons will be voluntary. It will be up to the driving instructor to decide when the learner driver is competent enough to have a motorway lesson.

Find out how the rules will work in the full announcement.

DIA to lead delivery of communications and learning programme to prepare Learners, Trainers and other network users for the changes

DIA is currently working with Highways England (the agency responsible for managing the high speed road network) to develop a series of free to use learning resources for both ADIs and Learners to meet the changes. The training programme will focus on developing the skills and knowledge of novice drivers to better enable them to use the high speed road network more safely. Specific CPD workshops will also shortly be made available to ADIs who want to develop their learning delivery in this area-covering motorways, high speed urban and rural roads.
